Sunday 13 May Athens Day three

Finally realised the dream of a lifetime, and visited the Acropolis. Stunningly awesomely breathtaking. I have been looking at photos of these buildings all my life, and to actually see them and walk amongst them was amazing.
Afterwards we went down into the Monastiraki area of Athens, which is a fascinating mixture of flea market, cafes, and ancient ruins. We wandered about, looking and listening, Our route home took us through Plaka, which is a more upmarket version of the same thing. We have shifted from our apartment near the sea to a more central flat, which is about two blocks away from the Acropolis. Massive balcony, on the 4th floor overlooking a busy residential street.

Eating again ... souvlakis this time ...  very good!
There it is!!!  The Acropolis.

Odeon of Herodotus Atticus - apparently used nowadays for summer concerts.

The Propylae (entrance to Acropolis).
The Parthenon - just awesome in scale and craftsmanship.
Lykavittos Hill - where we went yesterday.

Temple of Zeus - where we are going tomorrow (note column blown down in a gale in 1852).

Kia and Athens

The Erechtheion

Caryatids supporting the roof of Erechtheion
Ready to go shopping!!

  1. Ciao the pod - I am molto enjoying your travels - in fact i can feel the heat from the photos - which is a bonus now that we are cooling down here! You are certainly making the most of your time - are you fitting in a siesta so that you don't fall face first into your food dining so late at night? Arriverderci Wendy Gunn

    1. Hi Wendy - you must be packing your shorts and sunblock ready for your travels yourself aren't you? Yes, some pretty tired children at the end of each day, but we are due to slow down a bit soon when we head to the islands tomorrow - some beach-lying now in order!

Reed thinks that you must have felt like ants under the big buddha. Sarah wishes she was there, actually we all do! Keep having fun. Room 5

    1. Hi Room 5 - good to hear from you all! We have been really busy, rushing about each day, and the heat is really tiring. Today we are going to sightsee in the morning and then visit the nice cool museum in the heat of the afternoon. Hope your rugby and netball is all going well, Mrs Wales

  5. Hello Room one from Danae. I am having a really good time. Yesterday we went on a tour of Naxos. There were lots of goats on the road, and lots of kids (baby goats) and they were really cute. Some of them had bells around their necks and some of them didn't. There was a huge and beautiful lizad and Dad tried to pick it up, but it hissed at him and ran back into its hole. When we went away it slunk back out again. I had an amazing day and I can't wait to get back and tell you all about it. Emily - no the swing was already broken, Romy was just pretending. from Danae.
From Dinah - Reece, you may have enjoyed the first movie or two, but knowing how hard you find it to sit still, I think the full 14 and a half hours on the plane may have worn you down!!!
