Thursday 7 June Barcelona

Slower day today after the many miles we put in yesterday - I knew that this trip would involve a lot of walking and I was certainly right there! We get home at the end of each day absolutely bone-tired, completely stuffed, and usually just fall over for half an hour or so before we can rouse ourselves to get some sort of dinner organised.
By the time we got out of the house it was late morning. We split into two groups - Romy and Kia and I went to visit the Picasso Museum in the Barri Gotic (old town area), while the other three went to the Maritime Museum down at the port. The Picasso Museum was great - organised chronologically, starting with his pictures and paintings as a small child, and with very good information panels, so you could see how and why his style developed in the way it did, which really helped to make sense of some of his later, more challenging paintings. Meanwhile, the Maritime Museum was unfortunately mostly closed, with only one of five galleries open, but the ticket also gained access to an old schooner (Danae’s report - “it was really cool, with huge masts and sails, and we also saw the bridge opening to let ships through while we were on it”.)
In the afternoon we took the funicular railway up to Mountjuic, a big open parkland that overlooks the city, where all the sportsgrounds were built for the 1992 Olympics, and with lots of lovely gardens. We wandered about for a bit looking at things, and then went for a swim at the Olympic pool. Fabulous on a sweltering hot day, although the large number of topless women was interesting. The kids didn’t know which way to look (Jeremy did!!)
