Monday 4 June Sorrento to Rome

Today was a nice slow morning. The school group we are with went out shopping, and we stayed at the hotel to catch up on emails and the like.We met up late morning and walked up into the hills above Sorrento, to a little farm where they grow and make a variety of produce, from olive oil, to wine, to mozzarella and ricotta cheese. They gave us a great demonstration of how to make both mozzarella and ricotta, using fresh milk from their own herd of buffalo, and then fed us a fantastic lunch featuring their produce. First time I have ever eaten fresh olives, straight off the tree. Delicious!
We got on the bus and headed into the centre of Naples. Nobody but nobody has a good thing to say about this place, and we watched in fascination as we rolled through the city, past dirty, rubbish strewn streets, gypsy encampments, and block after block of desperate looking, shabby apartment blocks. The bus pulled up right outside the central railway station, by which point my courage was at an all time low, and every person I looked at seemed menacing and downright scary.
Just like finding a big hairy spider in the classroom though, you just have to hold it together for the kids, so we bid a very fond farewell to our travelling companions and descended from the bus.
A big thankyou here to Bridgnorth School from Shropshire, we just loved our five days with you. It was great to get to know you a little bit Jo, Mike, Deb, Ceri, Claire and Sarah, thankyou for making us so welcome and for being so entertaining! You have a great class of lovely kids, we enjoyed their company immensely, they are all a real credit to their school and their town. We will really try to make a detour your way when we get to England.
Thanks also to Laurence, or Lorenzo the Magnificent as we like to call him. Fantastic tour, cous, we loved it. Thanks so much for letting us tag along.
Anyway, we scuttled into Naples train station (or ‘Pickpocket Central’, as Laurence calls it - thanks for that Loz!!) I managed to change our train tickets for an earlier train, and we were out of there within about 25 minutes of arriving. It has been brilliant to visit, Pompeii and Vesuvius were amazing and Sorrento is lovely, but I am pleased we came here with a group, and I can’t see myself hurrying back to Naples.

  2. Hey there gang from frosty central. Cheers jerry for the lovely post card. It has been great keeping track of your tour so far. Not sure how you find the energy at the end of each day Dinah to write such a comprehensive description of your adventures! Caught up with Johnny( who is like a pig in mud) on the farm at the weekend and managed to come away with a nice Fellow spiker from Rough Ridge.(Yummy)Very envious of you all over there in the lovely summer weather etc. Not so envious of the trying to keep ones possesions in pockets, bumb bags etc in dodgy train stations. Hope your trip continues well. All our love from the dribling noses and coughs of the Alex Lambeth Clan......
